Useful Phrases

As I’m off to Israel again, I’ve taken the opportunity to brush up on my Hebrew over the past week and learn some more words. My Hebrew vocabulary is fairly limited, but I’ve got a library of Hebrew language CD’s which are good. I’ve also dug out a Hebrew phrasebook which contains many ‘useful phrases’. However, after reading some of the phrases in this book, I’m both confused and slightly alarmed. Here are a few of the more peculiar ‘useful phrases’:

Are koalas from Australia? ha-koalot me-australia?
— hmmm, I’d better make sure I remember this one, it’s bound to come up…

Does anyone here know sign language? mishehu po makir et sfat hasimanim?
— would you really be asking this question if you can only communicate in sign?

Are guide dogs permitted? mutar lehikanes im kelev mankhe?
— but how would a blind person be reading this phrasebook?

I’ve been robbed. shadedu oti.
— and this is considered to be a ‘useful phrase’?

I’ve been assaulted. hutkafti.
— ok, now I’m getting a little concerned…
