Installing a network printer on Windows 98

After many frustrating hours on trying to install a network printer on Windows 98, I eventually discovered that Windows 98 does not support network printing ‘out of the box’. Several printer vendors offer utilities that create a virtual port and enable you to overcome this limitation, however, if your printer didn’t come with such a driver, then there’s a generic ‘LPR for TCP/IP Printing Client’, which enables you to send a print file across a network using the Line Printer Daemon/Line Printer Remote protocol (LPD/LPR)—nearly all IP-based printers support this protocol. To install the LPR client, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to www.wegscheider.cc/d/lpr_win9x/
  2. Download the entire contents of the directory (except the first ‘Parent Directory’ link) by right clicking on each of the 7 links and saving them to your local drive (preferably in a folder).
  3. Open the PDF file that you downloaded and follow the instructions carefully.
  4. When you get to step 7, instead choosing the CD drive, browse to the folder with the files that you downloaded.

Providing you carefully follow the instructions, then it should work fine. At least, it did for me!
